This past year has been life-changing for the entire world. So many lives have been lost and lives of families changed during this frightful pandemic and the future depends so much on the pace and success of the new vaccines to be provided before more contagious and lethal variants can evolve and spread. In my small world of writing poetry, since August 2019, my writing time has been focused on serving as editor to assemble the second anthology in 16 years for our local poetry group in Newburyport, MA, the Powow River Poets, that includes many very accomplished poets. As editor, I was working under the guidance of three award-winning poets–Rhina P. Espaillat (Powow co-founder), Alfred Nicol (editor of our first anthology) and Jean L. Kreilng. Everyone’s daily world changed drastically by the time our editorial board for our small poetry group of 30 poets were working with our fantastic publisher, Alexander Pepple, founder and editor-in-chief of Able Muse Press, in March of 2020. We had no conception at that time of how much fear, isolation, illness, and death this virus would bring. We stayed steadfast to our small goal to bring to life The Powow River Poets Anthology II, launched on January 16, 2021. Creativity and a team spirit toward a unified goal kept us on track. Now, our concentrated efforts are toward spreading the news of our anthology to the quiet world of writers and poetry lovers via online Zoom and EventBright-like 2-D floating-head formats that cannot have book tables and author signings, but offer the ability to travel far without any commuting time or packing. Send an email to powowriverpoetsreadings@gmail.com if you are interested in being on our “Friends of Powows” email list to learn of upcoming readings and workshops. Our next workshop is Tuesday, March 16 at 7:00 pm at Poetry Society of New Hampshire, our host, Jimmy Pappas (jpappas235@gmail.com). Be well and keep writing.
